Contrasting Tones

The simplest color schemes contrast tones between the walls and trim. For example, a dark brown house might have white fascia, windows, columns, and doors. You are also welcome to invert the scheme by going with like walls and dark trim. For example, they might paint the doors red while keeping the trim white. It frames the red and causes the viewer's eye to instantly locate the door, ultimately producing a visual focal point.

Color Wheel

Another simple approach is to use the color wheel. If you want to make a major statement, you could choose dark blue for the walls and orange for the trim. A less drastic look might be to have white walls, dark blue trim, and orange as a color for a focal point like the door. It will look adventurous without being visually overbearing.

You also can expand with near complementary colors. For example, you can use blue and purple in a scheme that also incorporates yellow or orange. Especially if you're using a pastel color scheme, this can add some fun to the design.

Monochromatic

Finally, your residential exterior painting plan can employ multiple tones of the same shade. An all-brown house can use a range from tan to dark brown. For example, you can add interest by using different levels of the same color for the walls, windows, frames, and shudders.
